Buying Guide for Anthropometric Tape Measure

What exactly is an anthropometric tape measure?  We'll review the its basic specifications, as well as features that differentiate models.  In general, an anthropometric tape measure should be flat, think, flexible steel blade, with metric units, with blank space before the zero, and 2 meters long.   These requirements follow the ISAK (International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry) protocol.

1. Flat, Flexible Blade

  • Durability:

A steel blades won't stretch or deform in hot temperatures, ensuring an accurate scale.

  • Scale Printing on Each Side:

The tape should be metric, 2m long. Some tapes have metric on one side, then either inches, PI circumference conversion, or blank on the bottom side. Ideally the tape only has metric length units printed, to reduce user error.

  • Blade Dimensions

The blade should be about 6mm x 2m long. The narrow 6mm diameter provides flexibility to the blade.

2. Case Design & Material

Hold the case in your hand in the position of taking a measurement, and ensure that it feels confortable. Different cases have different feels. A stainless steel case is attractive and durable, through some people may have allergies to metal, it could also become rusted if not properly dried.

3. Blank Space Before The Zero

This space provides a convenient area for comfortable handling and consistent technique.
